An underwater assessment was carried out in June 2007 at the site of two proposed outfall pipelines associated with the Ballycotton/Shanagarry/Garryvoe sewerage scheme in County Cork. The desktop assessment noted that, although there were no known monuments in the vicinity of the outfall pipelines, there were several recorded shipwrecks in Ballycotton Bay.
The site assessment at Garryvoe recorded that the proposed pipeline will travel along the line of the existing concrete-cased and rock-protected pipeline. It will then be extended into an area of sandy, rocky shallows. The assessment did not record the presence of any archaeological materials, features or deposits in this extension area.
At Ballycotton, the pipeline will travel over a cobble and bedrock foreshore. The site assessment did not record the presence of any archaeological deposits, features or material in this area.
