The impact of a proposed small-scale housing development on the known and potential archaeological landscape at Abbeystrowery, Skibbereen, was assessed through a test excavation. The proposed development is partially within the constraint zone of a circular enclosure (CO141–078). The northern circuit of the enclosure is located within the south-west corner of the proposed development, while the southern side of the monument is located on the opposite side of the public road. Eleven test-trenches were excavated within the overall development area. Ten were placed across the long axes of the proposed houses and a further trench was opened along the access road through the site. The soil profile was uniform in all trenches and consisted of sod, a layer of topsoil and underlying sterile mixed boulder clay. No features or finds of archaeological importance were noted during the excavation of the test-trenches.
