Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed housing development at Tulla, Co. Clare. The investigations were carried out as part of an archaeological assessment in response to further information requested from Clare County Council. Recorded monuments in the vicinity of the proposed development site include Tulla Castle and ecclesiastical remains (CL035–022) located 150m to the east.
A tracked excavator fitted with a wide grading bucket was deployed to open ten trenches within the proposed development. Topsoil varied in depth from 0.28m to the north and east to 0.56m within the centre of the site. Its consistency varied from grey/brown to orange/brown sandy clay with occasional small angular stones throughout. No archaeological material was uncovered.
