Investigations took place along the route of the proposed N18 Gort to Crusheen road scheme. Site 146 (CL019–017), an enclosure, is marked on the OS map of 1916 and is described in the RMP files as being of probable early medieval date. It is visible on the ground as a well-defined circular bank up to 1.5m tall and 4m wide. The monument is oval in plan, measuring c. 20m by 25m, with the long axis running north-west/south-east. The site is in good condition and on this basis it was assessed in the EIS (McNaught 2006) as being of regional value.
The three trenches excavated by hand at this site were arranged in a pattern designed to determine if there was a ditch, bank and any deposits on the interior of the enclosure. This process revealed that no external ditch was present where tested. A bank constructed of earth and large stones, which possibly incorporated faced stones in some areas, was recorded. Only one feature, a pit on the interior of the earthwork, was recorded.
