Testing was undertaken at Cappagh Road, Kilrush, prior to a proposed retail development. Test-trenching took place on 1 August 2007, carried out using a 14-tonne tracked excavator with a flat toothless bucket. A total of twenty trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area, which measured 9380m2 (2.32 acres).
Test excavation failed to produce any evidence for archaeological materials or activity. The site appears to have been used as a landfill in the recent past. The fill material, though grassed over, formed a homogenous block of mixed material that included paper pulp, timber and assorted refuse (including mainly plastic and glass, and a variety of other detritus). This material sealed the underlying natural subsoil.
