It is proposed to construct a residential development at Kells Road, Mullagh, Co. Cavan. The site is located in an area of known archaeological activity, with a number of monuments identified in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development.
Monitoring was carried out at the site during February 2007, which revealed a number of potential archaeological features, consisting of burnt mounds, burnt spreads and linear and isolated random features. These archaeological remains were subsequently manually excavated.
Five distinct areas of archaeological activity were excavated. These consisted of the remains of Late Neolithic pits and Bronze Age fulachta fiadh as well as a series of features of unknown date. The identified archaeology suggests a continuity of activity and use of the area over a significant period of time.
