Testing was carried out to assess the impact on the potential archaeological resource of a residential development at Moodoge, Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. A rath, CV038–048, is located in the field to the west of the proposed development.
On arrival at the site on 31 May 2007 the testing strategy as detailed in the method statement could not be carried out due to the fact that the site had already been c. 90% stripped of topsoil. Testing was carried out in two small areas where the topsoil had not been removed. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed in these test-trenches. As the majority of the site had already been stripped of topsoil, all spoilheaps and baulks at the limits of the site were also inspected. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted in these areas.
It was also noted that some disturbance of the topsoil in the immediate vicinity of the rath had taken place as a result of dumping of soil and movement of machinery from the proposed development.
