The development plans include a proposed mixed residential development in Lisdrumskeagh, Shercock, Co. Cavan. The development is to be located on a greenfield site at the north-eastern side of the village. A rath (CV023–036) is located c. 350m west of the development site. Cartographic research indicates that the development site was open fields, similar to what is seen today.
Thirteen trenches were excavated within the site. The stratigraphy in Field 1 comprised good mid-brown clay topsoil underlain by a mixture of blue/grey marly natural subsoil and brown/grey stony subsoil. Modern white ceramic pottery was noted in some of the trenches. The northern portions of the trenches in this part of the development site were considerably wetter than the southern side and consisted of peaty layers associated with the marsh and wetland area.
The stratigraphy at Field 2 comprised, for the main part, 0.15–0.2m of earthy topsoil underlain by orange/brown silty clays which lay on top of the natural. A field boundary and some land drains were noted at the northern portion of this field. There were some gravel layers observed in some of the excavated trenches. The northern portion of the development site remains untested, as this area was marshy and wet at the time of this assessment and could not be assessed. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted in any of the trenches.
