Planning permission for construction of replacement pig-rearing buildings at this site required an impact assessment including testing. The development area lies within the extent of a former ‘enclosure site’. This monument was located on the top of a hill but was levelled in the 19th century; much of it was removed in the 1970s, after which the present farm complex was constructed.
Three trenches were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases were cleaned by hand. In addition, the spoil was raked through in order to determine the artefact-bearing potential of the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing and it is concluded that any subsurface remains of the enclosure site were removed during the course of ground-reduction works in the 1970s.
