The grant of planning for the construction of a rear extension to a dwelling at 31 Dublin Street, Carlow, required that the site be subjected to an impact assessment including testing. The site is situated inside the original town wall boundaries, which are believed to have been located a minimum of 30m to the east and 20m to the north of the development area. In addition, a town gate (Dublin Gate) was located and the junction formed by Dublin Street and Court Place, c. 20m to the north of the site.
Four trenches and a trial pit were excavated by machine fitted with a toothless ditching/grading bucket, following which the sides and bases were cleaned by hand. In addition, the spoil was raked through in order to determine the artefact-bearing potential of the topsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of testing.
