During May 2006 three trial-trenches, 46m2 in total, were excavated across the site as part of the A1 Beechhill to Cloghogue archaeological investigations, which confirmed the presence of archaeological remains.
The site was located on the summit of a hill overlooking the Newry River and Canal. Starting in December 2006 and continuing for twelve weeks an open area excavation of the site, 1400m2, was conducted to ascertain if there were any archaeological features pre-dating those depicted on the first-edition OS map.
Three buildings were uncovered, all dating from the 19th century, consisting of a large five-roomed house with cellar and two ancillary buildings for storage or farming-related activities. There was no surviving trace of activity before the construction of these 19th-century buildings.
