This site was recommended for archaeological evaluation under planning conditions. Cartographical evidence from the first-edition OS map suggested that there were buildings existing on this site before the erection of the current building in the early part of the 20th century. The evaluation took place from 19 to 27 September 2007.
This evaluation involved the monitoring of groundworks for the redevelopment of the site (HB 06/12/017), an art deco bank building at Nos 43–47 Main Street, Larne Co. Antrim. The area excavated revealed that the current building had effectively removed all visible evidence of any earlier Victorian building(s) that had once stood here. The presence of any underlying Victorian buildings was only evident in the form of a heavily truncated floor area and organic layers containing Victorian building and domestic refuse material. These layers lay above and below this floor layer and probably relate to the demolition of the Victorian building.
No earlier archaeological deposits were found during the monitoring of this development.
