Monitoring was carried out on groundworks for the construction of a new retail/office building on the southern bank of the Avoca River. The footprint area was c. 10m along the street front and narrowed to 4m at the south. It measured c. 12m in length and was excavated to a depth of 0.6m below ground level.
The excavated ground comprised fill and sterile river gravel deposits. The insertion of piles around the perimeter of the site indicated that a band of compact gravel lay c. 3m below present ground level and that bedrock was c. 12m below present ground level. Nothing of archaeological significance was found during groundworks.
