Monitoring of groundworks was undertaken in the northern part of this site at the corner of North Main Street and Trimmer’s Lane. Following demolition of standing structures, the existing ground level of the site was reduced by c. 1–1.6m. The stratigraphy uncovered consisted of modern rubble and soil deposits which overlay garden soils. The upper levels of garden soils were modern in origin but towards the base of the excavation artefacts were not apparent and the soil was a homogenous dark-brown layer. A portion of a green-glazed patterned medieval strap handle was recovered from the basal garden soil towards the southern boundary of the area excavated.
The level site was then covered in a layer of lean-mix and ground beams were set on this level.
A lift pit was excavated at the eastern side of the site. It was excavated to a depth of 1.6m below the existing street level. The area of the lift pit contained modern foundations and dark-brown garden soil that contained fragments of red brick.
