A subcircular pit excavated in December 2006 may have been a smelting pit associated with metalworking taking place at the early medieval enclosure nearby, tested by Fintan Walsh in May 2006 (see No. 2050 above). Further testing of the proposed development area was undertaken by Yvonne Whitty in October 2006 (see No. 2051 above), who identified the two possible areas of archaeological potential that were excavated by the writer. It was concluded that the first pit may be a smelting pit but the second pit was the remains of a tree root bole that had burned in situ and was not of archaeological interest.
