An assessment was undertaken in respect of a residential development on the outskirts of Clonmellon village, Co. Westmeath. As part of the assessment, a programme of test excavation was carried out. Five trenches were excavated across the development area. A single longitudinal trench was excavated oriented north–east/south–west along the inside of the western boundary of the site. Four trenches were excavated at right angles to this. The depth of the topsoil was varied throughout the field, with a maximum of 0.74m and a minimum of 0.33m. The subsoil consisted of a mottled orange/black/yellow/grey clay with frequent amounts of shattered limestone. No features or objects of archaeological significance were identified through the testing programme.
