Testing was carried out in advance of a development at No. 12 Church Street, Athlone, in September 2006. It was carried out simultaneously with the testing at the neighbouring site of No. 10 Church Street (see No. 2029, Excavations 2006, 06E0832).
Testing demonstrated extensive disturbance dating to the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Surviving in situ deposits of potential archaeological interest were noted to the north/rear of the plot, consisting of medieval garden soils and possible early medieval consolidation fill present at between a level of c. 11.1m OD (top) and c. 10.9m OD (bottom). A sherd of medieval earthenware and a fragment of butchered animal bone were recovered from the medieval garden soil. Further archaeological work has been recommended.
