Testing carried out at Bastion Quay, Big Meadow, Athlone, Co. Westmeath, on 3 August 2005 in advance of the construction of three blocks of apartments, associated car parking, landscaping and site works, comprising 57 dwellings, a natural lake, mooring for sixteen boats, a footbridge and refuge area for wildlife when water levels are high.
The proposed development is to be situated immediately south of the zone of archaeological constraint for Athlone town, in an area considered to be of high archaeological potential. Five archaeological trenches were excavated along the footprint of proposed developments on the site. All recorded significant quantities of modern rubble, debris and waste material. No archaeological features or material were noted in any of the test-trenches.

Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2005, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
