Monitoring was undertaken of groundworks associated with the proposed construction of a retail development park of seven warehouse units, with ESB substations and parking for 400 cars with associated site works at Six Cross Roads, Waterford, in advance of works. The proposed development involved the full excavation of the area. Topsoil-stripping took place over four days in September 2006. The site was located to the south of Waterford city and immediately north of the new Waterford ring road, outside the zone of archaeological potential of Waterford city.
Monitoring identified two features of archaeological significance, which were fully excavated. Pit [003] was possibly used for burning, as the northern side of the pit was oxidised. It contained a number of metal finds and also some burnt bone. Pit [008] was a shallow pit filled with stone; this was possibly where stone from field clearance was dumped or stored for later use.
