The construction of a single-storey extension behind 17 Catherine Street, Waterford, was monitored in early 2005 and a test-trench was cut. The site is outside the city walls but within the former precinct of St Catherine’s Abbey.
Slate and rubble under a deep recent garden soil and an 18th-century cultivation soil appear to represent demolition of abbey buildings. Use and decay of the buildings, represented by burning, trampled surfaces and midden, was generally below current groundworks. No human bone was found, in contrast to the nearby site at Grubb’s Lane excavated by Niall Gregory (Excavations 2004, No. 1692, 04E0551).
Editor’s note: Although this licence was issued during 2005, the report on the work was not received in time for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
