To assess the impact of a proposed development at the former Egan’s pub in Barronstrand Street, Waterford, standing walls were investigated and test-trenches were cut by hand through the floor.
Most of the fabric above ground level was from the 19th and 20th century, with some 18th-century walling and a short length of probable medieval city wall, standing two storeys high. Remains of a bank were found under the fragment of city wall, and beyond this a wide ditch with a mortared wall revetting the far side. A possible rectangular tower base under the pub floor may mark the corner of the early city wall, and a limb of masonry running obliquely into the ditch (fosse) may represent an additional medieval enclosure. At the east end of the site, medieval burials and clay building remains associated with the Dominican priory are at risk from the development. Some risk to the rest of the site may be posed by foundations.
