Testing was carried out as a condition of planning prior to the proposed development of a 30-suite hotel block. The adjacent Island Castle was subject to planning. The extension to the castle was parkland before development. There was no known monument on the areas subject to the proposed development but ‘site of the castle’, a delisted monument, lay adjacent to part of the proposed development.
Twelve test-trenches were excavated. No features of potential archaeological significance were recorded in the course of the testing and no finds of greater antiquity than the 19th century were recorded.
