Excavation was carried out in November 2006 in advance of the construction of the M8/N8 Cullahill to Cashel road improvement scheme. Prior assessment and centreline test-trenching was carried out in 2005 (Excavations 2005, No. 1388, A027/006). The site was located adjacent to the Black River and a possible burnt mound identified in the EIS. Site AR35 was discovered during testing of the route. The site was located in a level field used for tillage; it consisted of two areas of archaeological potential c. 30m apart.
Area 1 was located on the eastern edge of the site; it contained thirteen potential archaeological features, of which seven proved to be archaeological in nature. Two troughs and five pits were excavated. The main trough measured 1.97m by 1.72m and 0.34m in depth. It contained four fills of burnt stone and charcoal. There was no evidence of a burnt mound in this area.
Area 2 was situated 30m to the west and consisted of a burnt mound measuring 9.4m by 7.85m and 0.15m in depth.
