Two trenches were excavated on the site of a proposed commercial development, just off Silver Street. The first trench, running c. 10m north–south, revealed a very large intrusive feature cut deep into the subsoil towards the southern end of the site. A second trench, at right angles by the southern boundary, lay completely within the feature. The trench was excavated to a depth of c. 1.5m, at which point there was a change of layer that may indicate a base. Water began to enter the trench at this point. The feature is clearly post-medieval in date; several sherds of red glazed earthenware and a fragment of clay-pipe stem were retrieved from it. The southern edge of the feature was not identified, but the feature did not continue on to another site close by (see No. 1905 below, 05E1389).
