The OPW are undertaking a programme of stabilisation and repair works at Kilcash tower-house as structural faults have developed in the southern wall of the tower-house and the wall of the 17th-century house. The test-trenches were excavated on the footprint of a steel and timber support that is to be erected to facilitate the repair work.
Six test-pits were excavated by hand to the depth of the foundations of the steel structure and/or to the depth of undisturbed natural subsoil or rock on the interior of the tower-house and the northern side of the 17th-century house. A number of cobbled layers were recorded within the tower-house and rubble and cobbled layers against the wall of the house.
A further three pits will be excavated on the exterior of the wall of the 17th-century house in 2007.
