Three test-trenches were opened on the site of a proposed milking parlour and dairy assembly yard within the confines of an existing farmyard. Located within the farmyard is a castle (site of) and a bawn. There is no trace of the monument, it having been destroyed as part of the expansion of the farmyard and associated outbuildings.
Two features of archaeological potential were found, two parallel ditches. Both were 2.1m wide. Although in close proximity to the castle site, nothing was found to associate them with this monument; apart from some charcoal, nothing datable was retrieved. A section was cut through one of the ditches, which proved it to be a very shallow cut (0.32m deep). The fill comprised a moderately compact mid- to dark-brown sandy clay with frequent charcoal flecks and occasional small to medium stones. Due to its dimensions, it was therefore considered to have no defensive function and may either be associated with land division or agriculture.
