An excavation was carried out in September and October 2006 in advance of the construction of the M8/N8 Cullahill to Cashel road improvement scheme. Prior assessment and centreline test-trenching was carried out by Melanie McQuade in 2005 (Excavations 2005, No. 1388, A027/013). Site AR43 was discovered during testing for the route. The site was situated in a level field used at the time for pasture. It consisted of two burnt mounds, one in the north-west (Spread B) and one to the south (Spread A)
Spread A measured 17m by 13m and was 0.16m in depth. When the mound was excavated, numerous potential archaeological features were identified. However, it soon became clear that these were either natural depressions filled with burnt stone from the mound or the result of root disturbance from the nearby boundary hedge.
Spread B measured 11m by 10.5m and was 0.14m in depth. Once the mound was excavated, seven potential archaeological features were identified. Two of these proved to be pits containing burnt-mound-like material. The other five were the remains of troughs, four rectangular and one subcircular in shape.
