These sites were initially identified during test excavation carried out in August 2005 along the N8 Cashel to Mitchelstown road improvement scheme. The sites were subsequently excavated between 21 March and 4 April 2006. The excavation of this site yielded a burnt mound, one well-defined structure (Structure 1) and a more tentative structure (Structure 2) that was partially sealed by the burnt mound.
Structure 1 was identified c. 15m to the south-west of the burnt mound. A series of post-holes varying in diameter from 0.07m to 0.4m encompassed an area c. 6m in diameter. A large pit was located within the structure and may be associated. A north-facing well-defined entrance with a possible porch-like arrangement was noted.
Structure 2 was less coherent in plan and its identification as a structure is somewhat tentative. It enclosed an area c. 5.5m in diameter and was defined by a series of post-holes, some of which had extensive stone packing. The post-holes varied in diameter between 0.15m and 0.35m. A possible entrance was noted along the south-east-facing ‘wall’ of the structure, again with a possible porch-like arrangement.
