Eight test-trenches were machine excavated across the area of the proposed development. Six of these produced no evidence for any deposits of archaeological significance. However, in two, the eastern end of Trench 1 and the western end of Trench 5, the remains of the foundations of a stone structure, probably a wall, and a large soil-filled pit were uncovered. The short length of foundation was uncovered in the north-east corner of the site, while the pit was found partly running out under Market Street, in the south-east area of the development. Early modern pottery was uncovered in association with the foundation, while pottery dating to the 17th or 18th century was recovered from the pit. Both features were fully resolved in the course of the assessment.
