Five test-trenches were opened on the site of a single-house development in the townland of Kilmacowen, which is c. 6km south-west of Sligo. The house site is within the constraint area of a ring-ditch (possible), which had been identified by an aerial photograph.
No archaeological features or deposits were found in any of the test-trenches; in fact, the upper stratigraphy was totally homogenised, suggesting consistent and sustained ploughing over the last few hundred years. Furthermore a great deal of land management had been undertaken in the latter half of the 20th century, resulting in boundary clearances and ground levelling. A nearby monument (an enclosure, SL020–102) had been greatly disturbed by the recent land clearances.
