Development of this site, where testing and excavation had taken place in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1521), began in early 2006 and took place in several stages. The main area, 300m by 200m, was stripped. One small area of burnt stones, to the north of where there had been a tree-ring, was exposed and excavated. The occasional burnt stone 60m to the north-east suggests that repeated deep ploughing over the last century had obliterated other burnt spreads.
Three major external corridors for pipelines were monitored at soil-stripping stage. The corridor to a proposed water tank on high ground to the north-east revealed a complex of burnt spreads to the south of a house platform and a dried-up water source. There were no finds with the burnt material. A single piece of worked chert was found near the north-east end of this corridor.
The corridor running along the outside of the east boundary wall of Hazelwood Demesne to a storm-water outfall at the edge of Lough Gill was monitored. There were no finds here, despite this being in a similar location to where several burnt spreads have been noted on the south side of the Garavogue River.
The corridor for sewage ducting north of the boundary wall of the Hazelwood to Sligo road was monitored. Prior to the soil-stripping, a small two-roomed building was recorded before being demolished. Local information was that there were other similar buildings along that wall. Evidence for one came in the form of a length of wall foundation and four 17th-century sandstone roof slates.
