Archaeological conditions were placed on the proposed development of a single house and associated services in Derroon, Ballymote, Co. Sligo. The development is located in relatively close proximity to a rath (SL033–049) and three saucer barrows (SL033–48, 50 and 51). The area consists of improved undulating grassland, with magnificent views to the west.
Five test-trenches examined the impacts of these proposed works. One was located along the line of the driveway, two across the footprint of the house, one along the line of the sewerage and one across the area of the percolation trenches. The results showed the remarkably shallow topsoil came down directly on to a stony yellow/brown clay subsoil, with no evidence of any archaeological deposits or features. Nothing of archaeological significance survived.
