Groundworks for the construction of an extension to a leisure centre incorporating two all-weather pitches and a playground were monitored at Waterpoint Leisure Centre, Carrowhubbuck South, c. 500m north of the seaside village of Enniscrone. Two passage tombs (possible) are to the south of the site.
Apart from a series of relatively modern field drains, only one feature of possible archaeological significance was discovered during the monitoring. Extending beneath the baulk of the excavated area, the feature’s exposed dimensions measured 0.38m by 0.32m by 0.36m (deep). Its sides were vertical at the top, becoming more rounded at the base and extending to a flat bottom. Two fills were recorded in the cut but no artefacts were found. As it was on the edge of the stripped area, it was possible to avoid further disturbance of it, thus allowing preservation in situ.
