Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed housing development at Ballygawley, Co. Sligo, on 23 June 2006. A cashel is located c. 70m east of the proposed development site. Testing comprised the excavation of ten trenches on the footprint of the proposed development. The topsoil cover was thin, varying from 0.1 to 0.3m in thickness. The topsoil generally overlay coarse gravel and brown sandy clay on the higher ground, and orange/brown sandy clay subsoil in the lower-lying parts of the site. Outcrops of limestone bedrock were exposed along the eastern edge of the site. No archaeological material was uncovered.
