The site of the proposed development, to consist of a reservoir and access road, is located in the townland of Creevolan, situated to the north-west of the town of Elphin, Co. Roscommon. It is near RO016–062 (ring-barrow). A 15m buffer zone has been established between the outer limits of the extant monument (as seen in the field) and the proposed site of the reservoir. Six test-trenches were excavated by machine (10-tonne, tracked) to the level of undisturbed natural. All measured 1.8m wide and were of varying lengths, including 2m by 30m, 1m by 25m, 2m by 20m and 1m by 15m. No archaeological remains were revealed.
