Pre-development testing was conducted in advance of the construction of two dwelling houses and ancillary works within the area of archaeological constraint of a conjoined rath at Castleland, Tulsk, Co. Roscommon. The proposed development site was located on flat pastureland c. 500m north of Tulsk village.
Three machine-cut test-trenches were excavated across the proposed development site. The trenches were 1.5m wide by 40m long, orientated north–south. Each trench was excavated stratigraphically using a Hitachi EX 60 equipped with a toothless bucket. There was a uniform stratigraphy across the entire site. A thin topsoil rested on a shallow subsoil which in turn overlay deep glacial gravel.
No archaeological finds or features were uncovered during the course of testing.
