Archaeological assessment on the proposed route of the N6 Ballinasloe to Athlone road scheme involved targeted test excavation of selected areas lying within the proposed road-take. Work was commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Design Office and sponsored by the National Roads Authority. Testing here was of a possible earthen-banked enclosure, which is to be destroyed during the course of the construction.
Two trenches were inserted across the ridge of the enclosure. These revealed the site to be a natural formation of earth and stone. A trench was also inserted at the interior to investigate the possibility of buried archaeological surfaces or deposits. This trench showed nothing of an archaeological nature. During the main centreline testing programme, the entire area within the possible enclosure was stripped and nothing of an archaeological nature was discovered.
