A non-disturbance archaeological assessment was undertaken of eleven waterways impacted on by the proposed N6 Ballinasloe to Athlone dual carriageway. The waterways comprise: RC4 (Cross River), Monksland/Crannaghbeg townlands; RC6 (stream), Crannaghbeg/Ardnagawna townlands; RC12 (drainage ditch), Mihnaboy/Ardnagawna townlands; RC18 (stream), Mihnahoy/Taduff East townlands; RC24 (stream), Taduff West/Belrea townlands; RC29 (stream), Balrea/Ardkeenan; RC42 (stream), Ardkeenan/Dooghan townlands; RC51 (stream), Moore North/Toberiheen townlands; RC52 (stream), Ballydangan/Moore North townlands; RC59 (stream), Cloonulty/Rathpeak townlands.
Visual inspection and metal-detection survey were employed to assess the archaeological potential at each of the river/waterway crossing locations. A sizeable buffer zone was included, at each survey location, extending the survey a minimum of 30m either side of the road-take. No archaeologically significant deposits/structures were encountered as part of the assessment.
