Monitoring took place at a proposed quarry site at Derryarkin in November 2006. The topsoil and overlying peat were stripped with a 21-ton Hyundai 210 mechanical excavator using a six-foot-wide grading bucket. The average depth of topsoil and peat on the site was c. 1.02m, varying from a minimum of 0.3m to a maximum of 2m in depth. The peat was removed either directly on to gravel or in some instances on to a layer of marl which overlay gravel. No archaeological features or objects were recovered during the monitoring and inspection of Phase 1 of works on this site. Further phases are expected to take place in 2007.
