Three test-trenches were excavated in the carpark to the rear of the Super Valu supermarket at 27–31 Main Street, Birr, in advance of a proposed development on the site. The trenches measured 4m, 3.4m and 3.2m in length respectively and the stratigraphy encountered consisted of 0.8–0.95m of modern fill material and dumped deposits overlying natural compact gravels. No features or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered on the site.
