Pre-development testing was carried out on the site of a proposed headquarters building for Monaghan County Library Service and Local Branch Library at ’98 Avenue, Clones, Co. Monaghan, on 4 July 2006, which was in the vicinity of ecclesiastical remains. Three trenches, averaging 25m in length and 1.6m in depth, were opened on the development footprint. Underlying the tarmacadam surface there was a 0.7m-thick layer of aggregate and rubble which was built up on terram sheeting. The terram sealed a deposit of peat, which was excavated to a depth of 0.8m. No archaeological material was uncovered.
