This excavation took place after a series of test excavations carried out by Tim Coughlan in 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1357, 04E1533) and 2005 (04E1533 ext.) at the site of a proposed school development off St Loman’s Street, which is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Trim town (ME036–048). These excavations identified the possible remains of a robbed-out medieval wall and a number of deposits that may have had a medieval origin.
The current excavation took place on 19 and 20 June 2006. During the digging of the foundation trenches of the proposed classroom building, four features of archaeological potential were uncovered. Two of these were linear trenches that ran parallel to each other, 2.4m apart, in a north–south direction. It is possible that these trenches represent foundations of a post-medieval structure that previously stood on the site. The other two features recorded were dumps of stone mixed with mortar and clay. It is believed that they may represent demolition rubble from a previous building that was demolished to allow the construction of the cottage building on the site. No traces of medieval archaeology were found on site during the excavation of the classroom trenches or associated service trenches.
