It is proposed by the Office of Public Works to construct decentralised offices in Trim, Co. Meath. An assessment in the form of seven mechanically excavated test-trenches was carried out on the site in advance of construction. Prior to the assessment a geophysical survey had been undertaken across the area of the site, but this did not uncover any features of potential archaeological significance. The site was located on relatively flat, albeit high, ground that slopes gently down towards the River Boyne to the north.
A ditch was uncovered in the east area. It was 3.9m wide and 0.75m deep and extended beyond the limit of the trench to both the east and west. The ditch was cut directly into subsoil and was found to be roughly U-shaped in section with gradually sloping sides and a relatively flat base. A single fill was removed from the cut. No datable artefacts were recovered from the fill.
A second ditch was uncovered in the west area of the development. It was 2.2m wide and was cut directly into subsoil. The ditch contained a single fill. Differences in vegetation growth within the field suggests that this feature extended across the field and possibly beyond the west limit of the field. No datable artefacts were recovered from the fill.
