The testing was in response to a proposed development at Rathbrack, Kells, Co. Meath, where planning permission was granted for the construction of a single dwelling with a domestic garage and associated services. The site of the proposed development was partially located in the zone of archaeological potential associated with the Pale Ditch ME016–010, and was also adjacent to an earthwork, ME016–009. Archaeological evaluation of the site was carried out on 21 June.

Six test-trenches were excavated within the footprint area of the proposed dwelling, garage, well, driveway and septic tank. Each trench was 15–30m long and 1m wide. All trenches were excavated with a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. In each trench undisturbed subsoil was uncovered immediately below topsoil. No archaeological deposits were uncovered in any of the trenches.
