Four trenches were excavated across a tarmacadam football pitch just to the north-east of Navan Moat. An initial visual assessment of the site suggested that the whole area had been truncated by quarrying and this indeed proved to be the case.
The trenches were excavated to assess the site prior to the construction of a sports hall with foundations in the region of 0.6m in width and depth. It was found that the subsoil directly underlay the made-up ground below the playing surface.
Editor's note: This report was formerly labelled "19th-century quarrying, adjacent to motte and bailey".
