Due to the presence of a probable Bronze Age cairn (ME025–034) to the immediate north of the proposed reservoir site at Carn Hill, pre-development testing was undertaken from 28 to 31 August 2006 using a mechanical excavator equipped with a flat, toothless bucket. Twenty trenches were excavated within the area of the proposed reservoir. All trenches had a uniform width of 2m.

The natural subsoil consisted of a mid-orange/brown medium sandy boulder clay with occasional decayed stone inclusions. Within the north-western part of the site it consisted of grey shale bedrock. In Trench 20, an irregular-shaped spread of loose black sandy clay that contained frequent inclusions of red brick was exposed. This spread measured 1.75m by 0.8m and was 0.08m in depth. This feature probably relates to the small structure that is marked at this location (facing on to the road) within the OS mapping. The feature was deemed archaeologically insignificant. No finds or features of archaeological significance were identified in the course of testing.
