Test-trenching was carried out on a proposed development site at Bakery Lane, off Trimgate Street in Navan, Co. Meath, on 3 April 2006. The proposed development was located within the zone of archaeological potential for Navan in a site measuring c. 25m by 9m. Four trenches were excavated by machine, measuring 15.5m, 4.8m, 5.2m and 4.8m long respectively, 2m wide, and 0.9–1m deep. All four trenches had similar stratigraphy, consisting of a concrete slab overlying a mixed layer of modern rubble containing red brick, gravel, concrete and occasional inclusions of slate, mortar, rotting timber and a small amount of brown clay. Underlying this layer was the natural, which consisted of a mix of sand, gravel and water-rolled pebbles, suggesting glacial deposits. No evidence of archaeological activity in the form of artefacts or features was noted in any of the trenches.
