Two trenches tested this site following the demolition of an extension and a free-standing stone structure, probably built in the 18th century, at the back of a house on the east side of Castle Street. The line of Castle Street would have formed part of the line of the Early Christian enclosure. A castle that was recorded at the corner of John Street and Castle Street in 1663 was demolished by 1836. This was probably built on the site of the earlier motte and bailey.
The original ground level was shown to slope down towards the east. There was evidence for dumping of clay and building rubble to bring up the ground level. This took place before the construction of the free-standing stone structure. No archaeological material was observed in the two trenches and no artefacts were recovered.
