This site was located within Contract 3 (Navan bypass) of the proposed M3 Clonee to north of Kells motorway and was identified during geophysical survey (Bartlett-Clark Consultancy 2002). The geophysical survey revealed several archaeological anomalies, while advance testing by Aidan O’Connell in May 2004 (Excavations 2004, No. 1241, 04E0578) identified the scattered remains of a burnt spread. Full resolution between July and August 2006 identified numerous pits with burnt stone in their fills. These varied in shape and form and some probably functioned as troughs. A series of north–south shallow ditches contained metalling in some areas. This feature may have been a metalled trackway, or it may be designed to assist with drainage.
