Monitoring undertaken under licence 05E1321 identified a single area of archaeological significance in the mid-north of a proposed residential development at Killegland, Ashbourne. After discussions with the client and DoEHLG, these features were fully resolved under licence 06E0782.
The area was designated Road 3 in line with the proposed development plan. The limits of the proposed road were initially stripped of topsoil, but, upon identification of archaeological remains, the area was extended in order to determine the limit of the features. The features resolved in this area comprised a series of large curvilinear ditches, a semicircular ditch and other linear features. Smaller features included burnt areas, post-holes, possible windbreak gullies, metalling and possible kilns.
Stratigraphic relationships were identified between the enclosing ditches, but no artefacts were recovered that could indicate the date of these features. Post-excavation analysis is ongoing and radiocarbon dates will be sought in order to determine the date.
The curvilinear enclosing ditches continued to the north into the area of the new GAA pitches.
